Decide how long the model thinks

September 2, 2026

A control sits next to the model picker in chat: no thinking, low, medium, or high. Medium is the default, and the setting belongs to the conversation — a thread you set to Low is still Low tomorrow.

It exists because thinking could eat the whole answer. A fast model handed a hard question would reason to the end of its output budget and return nothing at all: a "Thought" block, then silence, charged in full. The ceiling on a reply is now generous enough that there is always room left to answer, and when a turn still somehow spends everything on thinking, the reply says so instead of showing you an empty message.
